The
Gonic School in Rochester was built in 1887 with local brick and
granite, and intricately detailed from the brickwork to the roof
eaves (right in photo). The challenge was to add over 25,00 square
feet of space, including a multipurpose room, to the historic structure
and still maintain its scale and character. This was accomplished
by mirroring the existing building with a three story classroom
wing detailed to match the old structure, placing a new entrance
between the two, and locating the multipurpose room behind both
where its massing is hidden. The resulting addition is as functional
as it is sensitive to its historic neighbor. |
