The
primary design challenge for this project was a pre-permitted
site plan that forced us to work within a tight rectangular
footprint, a shape not normally associated with team-centered
middle school designs and daylight in every classroom.
By
wrapping the teams of five classrooms around a central gymnasium/computer
room/utility core, we were able to accomplish a well organized
layout that provides team areas, team rooms, classrooms sharing
folding walls, and natural lighting to every space.
In
addition to daylighting, the building is equipped with many
high performance features, such as full heat recovery for mechanical
systems that provide air conditioning to the entire building,
occupancy sensor controlled lighting, and a compact and energy
efficient building envelope.
